There are approximately 165 wild horses on Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It is estimated that the park can support about 75 of these animals. In October the park will hold a round-up and subsequently sale about 75 horses, reducing the herd to about 90. There will be birth control methods induced into the remaining stock in an effort to keep the herd within manageable numbers. Here are a few of the horses running free inside Roosevelt National. These horses have never felt the touch of human hands, which includes veterinary care, feeding, etc... Yet they survive in some of the most harsh conditions in the lower 48 states. The main predator facing the horses, other than the unbelievably harsh winters, is mountain lions. The oldest mare in the park is believed to be 20 years old, and the most senior stallion is about 15.
